Description: 

The Ohio Environmental Council family of organizations seeks to hire a Communications Assistant who is a creative and innovative thinker, able to execute engaging, strategic digital campaigns across multiple platforms. The Communications Assistant will also support messaging, communications, and publications development for programs and fundraising in order to raise the profile of the organization, and to build a movement of environmental supporters across the state. This position is based in Columbus, Ohio.

Job Responsibilities & Requirements

Reporting to the Communications Director, the Assistant’s primary role will be to plan and execute digital campaigns to support the OEC family of organizations’ advocacy, accountability, and fundraising efforts. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing social media accounts for the OEC family of organizations
  • Managing paid digital ads
  • Coordinating with development staff for online and digital fundraising
  • Creating written and visual content for print and digital platforms (website, action alerts, email marketing)
  • Creating opportunities for new activists to engage the OEC family of organizations and then developing ongoing opportunities for meaningful action on environmental protection
  • Developing a strong, active network of social influencers
  • Supporting the administrative tasks of the Vice-President of External Affairs, Communications Director, and Managing Director of External Affairs

The ideal candidate should possess a depth of knowledge about digital platforms and emerging trends in social media and content creation. This individual must be a strong executer, able to make ideas and theories a reality. The Assistant is a support role and must be responsive and attentive, work quickly and efficiently, and follow instructions carefully while thinking about new ways to do the work better.

The Assistant must be positive, able to efficiently manage many different projects at once while delivering quality results, adept at prioritization and project planning, and able to distill complex topics into understandable messages for the public.

The Assistant should produce on-brand content, pay close attention to detail in design and writing, and keep a helpful, positive attitude. The individual should be flexible and eager to learn new skills and software.

Qualifications

The applicant must have an interest in environmental issues, democracy and Ohio politics, demonstrated experience in managing social media accounts, graphic design, video production, writing, communications and/or public relations (professional, volunteer, and academic experience all apply).

Knowledge of environmental issues, politics, and experience with nonprofit advocacy organizations, is highly desirable. Some night and weekend work required.

Compensation

This is an hourly position paying $15 to $16.50 per hour plus occasional overtime. Excellent benefits include health, vision, dental, and life insurance, flexible and dependent care spending account, generous paid time off, and employer-matched retirement fund.
